This is a drawing of the construction of the Victoria Embankment 1865-1870. The main purpose of this project was to solve the sewerage problem of London. Extension of land southward into the Thames narrowed the river but relieved congestion of the parallel streets further inland, Fleet Street and The Strand. The large building in the center is Somerset House. The view is west.
